T1 (DS1) lines...

 

- is a two pair of twisted copper wires, one pair for each direction.

- can go any distance by using repeaters from a vendor's central switch.

- a full T1 line transmits at 1.544 mbps bidirectional.

- a full T1 line carries 24 DS0 channels.

- a DS0 channel can be either 64 Kbps of digital data OR one voice line.

- a fractional T1 line is a line with fewer than 24 DS0 channels, thus costing less.

- a bonded T1 line is multiple T1 lines running to the router (T1x2 to T1 x 6).

- bonded lines transmit from 3 to 9Mb.  Anything higher uses a fractional T3 line.

- a point to point T1 line is one that is a direct connection to another office/building

- an integrated T1 line is a T1 with some DS0 channels voice, other channels data.

- a dynamic T1 line is where unused voice lines convert to data lines.

- a router determines the voice/data mix of the various T1 lines.

- a router can treat each DS0 channel separately or all 24 as one data line.

 

T1 orders...

 

- can go to any room you have for a line switching room.
- Usually installed within 30 to 45 days after contract is approved.

- WTA usually gets faster results on install, shortening it by 1 to 10 days. 
- contract is normally approved within 3 to 5 days of signing.
- main delay in approval is the credit application.
- all types of T1 lines come in one year, two year or three year contracts.
- backup redundancy can be achieved by a router that handles a DSL backup line.
- routers can come from the vendor, customer or WTA (Cisco, Tasman, others).

 

T1 costs...

 

- Ave cost of a fractional T1 line starts at $299/month for 378 Kbps bidirectional
- Ave cost a full T1 (all data) ranges from $370 to $669/month
- T1 line costs vary by managed (vendor supplied) or unmanaged (customer owned) router
- T3 line costs vary by distance from the vendor's POP (with selected vendors)
- selected vendors may offer lowest price with one year contracts vs. others 3 year contracts
- Standard contracts offer lowest prices at 3 years, we can sometimes get it at 1 year- a router

  can be maintained either by the user or by the T1 line vendor at extra cost.
 
DEFINITIONS...
T1 lines are technically referred to as T1 or DS1 channels.
1 T3 channel = 28 T1 channels = 672 DS0 channels = 44.736 Mbps.
1 T1 channel = 1 DS1 channel = 24 DS0 channels = 1.544 Mbps.
1 DS0 channel can be either 64 kbps of digital data OR one voice line.
DS = Digital Signal channel.
Bidirectional = can upload  and download data at same time.
Mbps = mega = million bits per second = 1,048,576 bits = 1Mb.
Kbps = thousand bits per second = 1024 bits = 1Kb.  A bit = one binary digit (a 1 or a 0).
POP = Point of Presence which is the location a line attached to a providers network.
